Episode 1: First Contact

As the camera moves through the clouds, the scene shows a beautiful land, focusing on one large building in particular. Inside the building, two women stand, waiting for the ascension ceremony to decide the 208th queen of Juraihelm. However, the third candidate, Tsunami, shows up late because she had to water the flowers in her room. Ramia, the second candidate, can’t believe that flowers are more important than the ceremony, and wonders why that “bungling girl” is aspiring to be queen. The members of the council then appear, and explain that it has been one years since the first queen’s passing, and the time has come to choose the next queen.

Title screen: First Contact

The council has merely one question for the prospective queens: If they were chosen, what would they propose to do for the kingdom? The third candidate, Romio, says that she would continue the work of the former queen. Ramia (with the use of visuals), says she that to combat Juraihelm's shrinking population, families with more than two children should get subsidies, while divorced couples would be punished by law. She also said that for people to pledge allegiance to the Imperial Rule, more weapons, more public order, and a complaints box were needed, which seems to impress the council. Finally it’s Tsunami’s turn and, after a few moments of thought, tells them she would plant flowers throughout the kingdom. Ramia thinks to herself what a fool Tsunami is.

The council tells the candidates that Juraihelm’s decision shall now be heard. Ramia, who is very confident, silently thanks Tsunami for making her look so good. Finally, the decision is rendered. The 208th queen of Juraihelm is...Tsunami!

Ramia, who obviously didn’t listen carefully, screams with joy and starts to thank the council...until she realizes whose name was actually said. Tsunami says that’s wonderful, but Ramia can’t believe it. Trap doors then open beneath the two other candidates, unceremoniously removing them from the room. Still unable to believe what’s happened, Ramia claws her way back up to the room, just in time to witness Tsunami being crowned. At the sight, Ramia screams and drops back down through the trap door.

Council says that it has been one year since the former queen of the magical kingdom of Juraihelm passed away. During the absence of a queen, the balance of Gemini (a huge scale with a white ball one one side and a black ball on the other) has tilted towards evil. As queen, Tsunami must restore Gemini to its original balance. She must meet a kindred spirit on the planet called Earth. When this girl bestows Juraihelm with the light of goodness, Tsunami will become the true queen. Tsunami says she’s chosen someone. On the screen, the view zooms in until we see Sasami, sitting in her room.

Meanwhile, Ramia’s home and she is NOT in a good mood. She whips off her ceremonial robe and throws in on top of her younger brother Rumiya, who makes the astute observation that she must have lost...and is kicked across the room by his sister.

Ramia continues her temper tantrum, ranting about how she has the strongest magic, best reputation and best looks. Suddenly, inspiration strikes and she tells Rumiya of her plan to remove Tsunami as queen. He tells her to just let it go (and gets kicked again), but Ramia will have no part of it. She says that if the girl Tsunami chose is unable to restore Gemini’s balance, the council’s decision will be overturned and she, Ramia, will be queen. While continuing to laugh evil-like about her plan, Tsunami shows up outside her window on her flying mat and tells Ramia she’s going to Earth for a bit. Ramia wishes her luck, but no sooner has Tsunami flown off than Ramia opens a portal to Earth and heads through it, taking a reluctant Rumiya with her.

In space, a door opens, and Tsunami flies through on her mat. Beside her is Ryo-Ohki, who is tugging on his fur and checking out his overall appearance. He asks Tsunami what he’s supposed to be, and she tells him an Earth creature called a cat. She tells him that he’ll be staying with a human girl on Earth, so that form is best for him. Deciding that she’s too nervous to meet Sasami, Tsunami turns him into a ball and sends him to Earth to meet her first.

Meanwhile, in the Umi no Hoshi shopping district, it’s 8:25 a.m. and Sasami is (typically) late for school! She scarfs down her breakfast, brushes her teeth, and jumps in the sidecar of her dad’s motorcycle for a ride to school. Waiting for Sasami, Misao is standing by a post. Hiroto walks by, they both blush, and she quietly says good morning to him. As he walks away, she says she’s not very good at those types of things.

Sasami drives up, apologizing for being late. Eimi comes up and tells Sasami that it’s against the rules to come to school by motorbike, and she’s going to tell the teacher that Sasami broke the rules. Konoha walks by with her group and taunts Sasami for being in trouble. As Eimi prepares to drag Sasami off to the teacher, something brown falls from the sky and lands on the back of Eimi’s neck. An upside-down, dizzy Ryo-Ohki meows at Sasami, and Eimi freaks out, giving Sasami and Misao the opportunity to make a break for it, with Eimi chasing after them. Observing all this, Ryo-Ohki says he’s found her.

EYECATCH

In class, Mihoshi tells the students that they’re going to talk about their future dreams. Hiroto’s is to be a soccer player (“That’s wonderful! Good luck!), Eimi’s is to be an actress (“Well, that’s impossible), while Konoha says she and her cousin are going to conquer the world (“All right, do your best!”). Misao very quietly says her dream is to be a pianist, while Sasami’s is to To be a kind mother like her mom, marry a cool guy like her dad and live happily ever after. Heading towards Earth, Tsunami apologizes and says that isn’t meant to be. She says that Sasami’s life is going to be anything but normal from now on.

On their way home, Sasami and Misao once again encounter Ryo-Ohki. Even though they can’t decide whether he’s a cat or a rabbit, Sasami says she’ll take him home and reward him with some milk for saving her earlier. Upon returning to CD Vision, the store her mother owns, Sasami finds that someone’s waiting there to scout her. Wondering who it could be, Sasami goes into the other room and sees Tsunami kneeling on the couch drinking tea.

Meanwhile, Misao returns home to her empty apartment. The message on the answering machine tells her that her mom is working late - again, and that supper will be delivered at the usual time. Misao thinks to herself that she’s always home alone.

“My, even that gloomy face of yours is nice.”

Startled, Misao looks up and sees Ramia appearing through the wall, with Rumiya perched on her shoulder. She introduces herself as the second candidate to be queen. Rumiya pipes up that she lost, though...and is thrown through a light fixture. Misao tries to run away, but Ramia seals the door. Cupping Misao’s face in her hand, Ramia tells her, as she looks deep into her eyes, that she came for her from a magical kingdom...

Back at CD Vision, Sasami is shocked to discover that Tsunami wants her to become Magical Girl Pretty Sammy and restore world peace. Sasami protests that she can’t make her and she doesn’t know what to do. Ryo-Ohki tells her she’s the only one who can do it. Sasami is shocked (“No way! The bunny talked!!!”), but Ryo-Ohki, who tells her he’s a cat, not a rabbit, introduces himself and tells her his purpose is to support her as Pretty Sammy. Tsunami gives her the magic baton (which Sasami thinks looks crummy), but Ryo-Ohki tells her if she transforms she’ll have magical posers. Sasami thinks that if she had magical powers she could get an electronic organizer, clothes and video games, so she agrees to give it a try. “Pretty Mutation Magical Recall!”

After transforming, Sammy takes a look in the mirror...and promptly tries to return the baton. She protests that she looks stupid in the outfit and will be the laughing stock of the town if anyone finds out, and imagines her classmates making fun of her. However, before she can give the baton back, Tsunami is already on her mat outside the window, ready to head back to Juraihelm. Sammy is still protesting as Tsunami flies off.

In the store, Sasami’s mom, Honoka, gets a telephone order for a CD delivery - from Ramia, who hangs up and tells a girl w/long blond hair and a black outfit to get going. The girl gives a thumbs-up and disappears. Ramia tells Rumiya to handle the rest and disappears, despite his protests that it’s her job.

Back at CD Vision, Sasami runs out of the back room. Honoka asks where the scout went and what she was scouting for. Sasami says magical girls, then laughs nervously and volunteers to deliver the CD, telling her mother to look after a protesting Ryo-Ohki. As she walks, Sasami hopes she wasn’t too mean, and wonders how Tsunami expects her to suddenly become a magical girl and what she should do. Ryo-Ohki runs up behind her, but after a brief chase scene, she gives him the slip.

Upon arriving at the delivery address, Sasami discovers it’s a vacant lot. Suddenly she hears laughter, and a fence of barbed wire rises from the ground, trapping her. Flares go off, and a blond girl in a black outfit, seated on a throne, rises from the ground. Rumiya flies up and perches on her shoulder.

Sasami asks her who she is, but the girl says she’ll tell her next time...
